Bradley Adamsson is a senior at South Pasadena High. He's the Valedictorian in this year's graduating class, a science nerd and member of the Geek Squad, a group of uncool kids who can't wait to graduate. Bradley has been accepted at MIT and plans to become an astrophysicist like his father. But Bradley has a problem. He's been diagnosed with Ollier Disease, which has led to liver cancer, and doctors tell him his condition is mortal. When Axel Taylor shows him a strange device he found in a cave, Bradley is intrigued.
Evaline Perez is one of the most popular girls in her graduating class at South Pasadena High. She and Bradley have an AP chemistry class together, but she's never spoken to him. Evaline is an A-lister, and her circle of friends does not include geeks. Evaline is going to UCLA next year and plans to become a physician. Her father left her enough money to finish college, but her stepmother is in charge of the trust, and Evaline has a disheartening discovery ahead of her.
Ax is also a senior at South Pasadena High. He is the California surfing champion and was third in the World's last year. He loves to hunt and spend time with his girlfriend, Evaline Perez. While hunting in the Angeles Forest one weekend, he discovered the skull of a saber-tooth tiger and, underneath it, a strange metallic object he couldn't identify. He showed it to the smartest kid in school, Bradley Adamsson, and then reluctantly showed Bradley where he found it. What they uncovered changed history.
Eliot, nicknamed "Stinky," is the funniest member of the Geek Squad. He's one of Bradley Adamsson's besties. He owns a dirt bike that sort of works and a beat-up yellow Honda Civic the boys call "the Pukester." Eliot doesn't have a girlfriend but thinks of himself as a stud.
Kevin Truman is nicknamed "Moe" because his mop of black hair over his forehead reminds people of Moe Howard of The Three Stooges. He thinks he ought to be named "Top Geek" because he is so totally pathetic.
John Adamsson is Bradley's father. He is an astrophysicist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena and has a PhD from MIT. When a strange explosion occurs in the nearby Angeles Forest, John becomes a member of the Angeles Event Task Force charged with investigating the incident.
Claudine Adamsson is Bradley's mother. They have two other children, Devin and Celia. Claudine works as a tax accountant and worries about Bradley's illness.
U.S. Air Force General Stephanie Vaughn is put in charge of the Angeles Event Task Force and is responsible for discovering what happened--and then recovering the alien artifact once they understand its true nature.
Russian Air Force Colonel Franko Pavlovich is reassigned from the Skyfall project when the Russian government learns about the incident in California. He is responsible for ensuring that Russia gains control of the Ark.
Russian agent Roma Nikitovich is ostensibly a cultural attache. He's really a Russian assassin who will do whatever it takes to fulfill his and Franko's mission.
Meng Shuren is an official in China's Ministry of State Security. She has flown to California with a team of agents to find the Ark and ensure that China possesses its power.
Wen Kang is an agent with China's Ministry of State Security. He is ruthless and athletic--a marathon runner--and will do whatever is necessary to take possession of the Ark.
Axel Taylor's discovery of this skull leads to an even more profound discovery of what lies beneath it.
The mysterious object with incredible power. The boys can't figure out what it does--until Bradley makes an amazing discovery.
There shouldn't be a tunnel here. What it leads to is astonishing and magnificent--but also deadly.
Among the Ark's amazing capabilities is this one--and it would have profound implications if the wrong people possessed it power.
This blue mango-like fruit from another world tastes like chocolate cheesecake and banana bombs. The Ark can reproduce these at will.
Here, the Ark flies above the ruddy expanse of Mars. It came from the Andromeda Galaxy and is capable of astronomical speeds and true interstellar flight.
Bradley Adamsson's life is turned upside down one day by an upsetting diagnosis, and flipped around again upon the discovery of a strange metal object. Bacon's novel is a whirlwind of sci-fi fun and personal growth as teenagers grapple with access to an immense amount of power. The sci fi action and sweeter moments are balanced so well in this book! I particularly loved the storyline with Evaline and her sister, and found all their interactions to be so full of care and so lovely to read. I loved the story this took me on, and found the descriptions of space to be so beautiful. I also thought that Bacon did a wonderful job writing teenagers with depth and grace, and I found myself relating to them and genuinely worrying for them the whole book. I really enjoyed this book, and think that for sci fi lovers or newbies to the genre alike, this is a wonderful read and I am glad I picked it up.

In The Cerulean Ark, Terry Bacon takes readers on a whirlwind of an adventure. This novel will capture your attention from the first few sentences to the final pages. Terry paints such an interesting adventure for the high school trio, Bradley, Axel, and Evaline, as they solve a dangerous and enthralling mystery that started out as what Axel thought was just a cool discovery in the woods while hunting. Bradley, unsure whether he should even trust Axel, learns a lot about life and embarks on an adventure that could not only change his life forever but give him the chance at life after a fateful diagnosis. Terry Bacon's love and appreciation for poetry comes out in the beautiful way he describes his characters and their adventures. This is a very captivating story that is well worth the read for anyone - if you're interested in your next favorite adventurous thriller, you have definitely found it with The Cerulean Ark!

In The Cerulean Ark, genres overlap to tell the story of a terminally ill teenage boy whose discovery threatens to alter the course of humanity. The author combines the challenges of young adulthood (bullying, longing for connection, nervous excitement about the future, self-esteem) with classic science fiction elements (UFOs, aliens, advanced technology). But then there are layers of international espionage, political rivalries between nations and the potential for World War III, world domination, social unrest, fearmongering, and multiple excuses for bad behavior. There’s a lot to digest, and readers can take or leave as much as they want without sacrificing any part of this highly enjoyable read.
Eighteen-year-old Bradley is a self-described geek whose plans to attend MIT are derailed after he receives a devastating diagnosis. The bleak outlook brightens when Axel, one of the most popular kids in school, asks Bradley to identify an object he found in the woods. The boys then unearth a six-fingered glove and a skull. Their discoveries lead to an alien spaceship that crashed on earth thousands of years ago. Onboard, the boys realize the magnitude of their find. The spaceship has the ability to heal, regenerate, recycle, and, despite its size, leave a negligible carbon footprint—all of the good things environmentally conscious beings hope to achieve and which Bradley is eager to share with the world. But in learning further how the ship works, he inadvertently alerts the rest of the world to its presence. The very human response to this unknown entity makes Bradley realize the advanced technology can also be used to create chaos and total destruction.
As a layperson, I thought the science was easy to understand and plausible when taken to an intergalactic level. I really liked the ship’s character (named Athena). I rooted for her because she represented so many good qualities. Bradley’s personality and quirks were fleshed out well, and I felt for him because the world’s morality rested on his shoulders. Some of the teen speak didn’t read true—more like awkward dialog from the 1950s—but it didn’t detract from the overall quality of Bacon’s work.

This captivating sci-fi adventure story not only offers an exciting mystery but also gets readers thinking about the moral implications of scientific discovery. Bradley is focused on moving on from high school when his life is abruptly interrupted by something sure to end it. This upset, however, is quickly followed by an amazing discovery, that not only saves him, but changes him forever. Along with an unlikely companion, Bradley discovers something amazing and soon finds himself protecting his discovery from world governments eager to get their hands on it while also trying to unravel the cosmic mystery he’s stumbled upon.
Bradley’s character is very well-written; readers will empathize with him from the start and be relieved that he was the one to discover the Ark. He is smart, curious, and deserves the second chance the Ark gives him. His curiosity drives the story forward and I was eager to figure out the mysteries surrounding the Ark with him. Where is it from and what can it really do? And does Bradley succeed in keeping it out of the hands of global world agencies pursuing him? There is an air of danger that lurks in the dark corridors of the Ark as well, which kept me reading. This book is perfect for anyone who likes adventure, mysteries, or a compelling story. I love that real scientific concepts were included throughout in an approachable way that added a very fascinating element to the story. Sci-fi fans and both young adult and adult readers will enjoy unraveling the mystery of The Cerulean Ark.
